I wanted to take some time out and discuss the possibility of Brett Favre assuming the role of QB in Baltimore this season. The same Ravens that with a healthy McNair in 2006, went 13-3 in the regular season. I have been a fan of the Ravens since inception and would like to write out an open letter to the Ravens as to why they should acquire Favre.
At the core of Baltimore is the Defense, which has been nothing short of great every season. I would match up the Ravens D against any other teams in the NFL. Almost a Pro-Bowl Caliber Player at every position.
The Line consists of DT Kelly Gregg, Haloti Ngata and Trevor Pryce. Ngata has started at 32 games of his career and is looking to have a fine season. Pryce is about as solid on the as you can get, earning 4 Pro-Bowl honors.Gregg has been snubbed for the pro-bowl in the past. If the offense could control the ball for longer chucks of time, this unit could be even better.
The Line backing core has always been the anchor of the Punishing Baltimore Defense. Led by the standard bearer Ray Lewis, you also have Pro-Bowlers Bart Scott and Terrell Suggs. Baltimore also has more youth talent at LB than any other team in the NFL. People are already making comparisons of Tavares Gooden to Ray Lewis, Antwan Barnes looked good at times through his rookie year, Brenden Ayanbadejo, Dan Cody and Prescott Burgess. Honestly, is there a better staff of linebackers in the NFL? I don’t think anyone is even close.
No Defense can be Great without a Lock-Down secondary. Chris McCallister and Samari Rolle are both Pro Bowlers with street cred. McCallister is always in the conversation when it comes to discussing the top corner backs in the National Football League. Ed Reed is a multiple Pro-Bowler and former NFL Defensive player of the year. His hard hitting, bruising style of play combines with elite athleticism make him one of the most feared defenders in all of football. Ed Reed is legit, and he will injure people. DaWan Landry rounds out this outstanding Defense of Baltimore.
With that level of quality on the defensive side of the football, it can’t be all that difficult to win. In 2000 DIlfer did just enough to manage through the playoffs. I think Willis McGahee is a more talented back than J Lewis. With Todd Heap, Willis McGahee, Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton… how could anyone no think that this is an ideal spot for Brett Favre to return this season?
Let’s look at it this way, who else will start? Kyle Boller has been mediocre at best. The bigger problem is that with current team philosophy, the Ravens don’t ask for much from their QB. That being said, Boller has still failed miserably. Joe Flacco is an option, but not a very good one. I think an ideal scenario for a young first round QB is to sit the first year to learn and develop slowly. Who better to learn from than the guy with all of the records? Flacco is obviously the future QB of the Franchise. Favre is 38 years old, it would be physically impossible for the same Scenario of Favre/Rodgers happening in Baltimore. If Favre comes, it’s gonna be a one or two year shot, period.
This was just my excuse to write why the Ravens should acquire Favre, and why Favre should consider playing for the Ravens. Questions or comments e-mail: rjohnstone08@yahoo.com
